A bright future for the US electricity grid

Solar energy could power 40% of America’s electricity by 2035, according to a new study.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) released the Solar Futures Study which calls for a massive deployment of clean energy sources to increase access to renewable energy across the country.

Solar power could play a key role in decarbonizing the country’s electricity grid, driving up to 3,000 gigawatts (GW) of solar power by 2050, which could result in the use of up to 1, 5 million people and no increase in electricity costs for consumers (as the costs would be fully offset by savings from technological improvements).

Last year, the United States installed a record amount of solar power – 15 GW – bringing the total to 76 GW, which is 3% of the current electricity supply.

The latest study, conducted by the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, points out that the United States will need to quadruple its annual solar capacity additions by 2035 and deliver 1,000 GW of electricity to a predominantly renewable grid.

Solar power is expected by 2050 to be able to deliver 1,600 GW on a zero carbon grid and produce more electricity than is consumed in all residential and commercial buildings nationwide.

The Solar Futures Study presents the blueprint for achieving this objective, which will be based on strong decarbonization policies, large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources, and grid electrification and modernization.

Without the policies and advanced technologies in place to reduce the cost of solar power, grid emissions will only drop by 60%.

The United States is expected to install an average of 30 GW of solar capacity per year by 2025 and 60 GW per year from 2025-2030. The rest of a carbon-free network will be powered by wind (36%), nuclear (11-13%), hydropower (5-6%) and bioenergy / geothermal (1%).

According to the study’s modeling, solar energy will employ 500,000 to 1.5 million people across the country by 2035, with the clean energy transition generating around three million jobs across all technologies.

The transition would see a combination of wind and solar power supply three quarters of electricity by 2035 and 90% by 2050, with significant savings in terms of health and costs, thanks to improved air quality and reduced carbon emissions.
