Forgemasters signs an agreement to support the development of SMR | Yorkshire Manufacturing News
Sheffield Forgemasters has partnered with a supplier of nuclear power plant technologies, fuels and services to support the potential deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) in the UK.
The MoU between Sheffield Forgemasters and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) commits to discuss how its existing and future capabilities could help meet the potential demands of the BWRX-300 SMR deployment.
In addition to helping customers meet their carbon emissions targets, the BWRX-300 has been designed to achieve significantly lower construction and operating costs than traditional nuclear power generation technologies.
David Bond, Managing Director of Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “SMRs have the potential to become the standard for civil nuclear power generation and as an emerging technology our long experience of supplying nuclear grade components brings wealth of forging technical experience in the market. .
“Sheffield Forgemasters is undergoing a transformation towards Industry 4.0 manufacturing technologies, the centerpiece of which is our investment of up to £400 million over ten years to replace critical assets to defend the business.
“We look forward to working with GEH to explore the possibilities of becoming a UK supply chain partner in the delivery of complex nuclear grade forgings in the BWRX-300 SMR commercial build program.”

The latest announcement follows Rolls-Royce SMR signing a £3.7 million contract with Sheffield Forgemasters to enable the manufacture of the first development forgings to support the roll-out of Rolls-Royce SMRs.
